Despite being a very demanding route, all the efforts pay off with the beauty of the landscape. With the Mediterranean in the background, you will enjoy the incommensurable charm of the Natural Park of la Serra del Montsant.

Main points of historical interest:

Escala Dei

Did you know that this little town’s name comes from a dream a shepherd had in the 12th century? Legend has it there were some Carthusian monks that were sent to the area to look for the best location to build a monastery. A shepherd told them that in his dreams he would see angels going up to the sky using a ladder in the same location where he would herd his flock of sheep. The monks took it as a sign from God and built, in that same place, a small cloister that later became La Cartoixa de Santa Maria d’Escaladei, latin for God’s ladder.

If during the route you don’t have time to rest, coming back to visit the historical Cartoixa de Santa Maria d’Escaladei, the first one established in the Iberian Peninsula, is worth.

Cornudella de Montsant

This little town at the feet of Serra del Monstant, (range) is very attractive for wine lovers, or any person fond of hiking, cycling and even climbing as it has the famous Siurana routes.

Paying a visit to the old winery of Cornudella designed by César Martinelli, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí, and doing a DO Monstant wine tasting are a must.

La Mussara

La Mussara is a deserted area since 1960, that nowadays belongs to Vilaplana. Despite not having inhabitants, its location offers spectacular views of the Prades mountains and the sweeping plains of the coastline of Tarragona.

In fact, it has become a starting point for hiking routes and is included in several cycling routes as well. But la Mussara is famous for other reason. Legends and strange stories about paranormal events pervade all accounts of this location.

During a recent archaeological expedition, a medieval temple was discovered under San Salvador church, the only one of the 8 old Mussara buildings that is still in considerably good state of repair.

Porrera

As described in the article “Sea and mountain: a bike route to discover the two sides of the Costa Daurada”. Porrera is the gateway to the Priorat region which is highly regarded for its wine.
